The peripheral nervous system consists of different nerve fibers. We are particularly interested in the sensory nerves that register and conduct painful experiences in the skin. In diabetes mellitus, high blood glucose and lipid concentrations can damage nerves and thereby lead to neuropathy and even neuropathic pain. A key interest of our research is to better understand how diabetes-associated pain (or painful diabetic neuropathy, PDN) can be better treated to improve the quality of life of affected individuals.
